Mental illness in western society
I started reading michel foucault’s madness and civilization, a book that opened my eyes to a whole new perspective regarding mental illness.
At a certain point I stopped and asked myself :
What is it that makes a person mentally ill ? What symptoms a human being exhibits for him to belong to that class of “the mentally ill” ?
Should he be unable to get out of bed ? Should he be unable to focus ? Hyperactive ? Worries too much ? See things or hear things that are not there ? And the list continues…
I couldn’t see what these things had particulary in common until I saw it there :
All these symptoms prevent you from being a productive member of a capitalist society.
It leaves you unfit for a 40hrs/week work schedule, or unable to pursue a university degree, and in conclusion you are not a source of income for capitals.
As a human being your body and your mind are in no capacity to have a monday to friday study program for 20 years followed by a monday to friday job until you die.
Your mind is not there for you to worry whether you’ll have money to eat or not 2 weeks from now or whether you will able to afford rent, your mind is not there for you to worry about a degree that will give you work 5 years from now.
Already 9 months in Canada and I start to see that everything about the north american continent screams “mental illness.”
People here have everything planned out for the next 3 to 4 months leaving themseleves unopen to any new experience, some of them whether students or workers are stuck living the same day over and over with no meaningful connections whatsoever, chasing a superficial lifestyle.
That does clearly show in the exagerated value people put on objects or the amount of pets they raise to make up for that emotional and experience deficit.
As a human being your biology is not apt to adapt with this lifestyle and when you are refuse to conform to a fixed schedule and a bunch superficial relationships, or when living this screws with your mental you get labeled as “depressed”, “anxious” , “borderline” and so on.
When in reality it is this lifestyle that nurtures and fosters what it calls mental illness and reaps mental torture.
Capitalism then tries to profit off the problem it created with the druga like antidepressants, sedatives and whatever and they don’t make you feel better, these drugs numb you so you can be able to get out of bed and go to work without having to think about it or questions what you are doing.
These dugs take away the pain for you to conform at the price of your hamanity and valid emotions.
This lead to one of my favorite quotes by Slavoj Zizek: “ religion is no longer the opium of the people, the opium of the people is now “opium” and the “people”. “
What can we do to escape this ? Can we choose our health over materialism and still not end up poor or homeless ?
Only thing left for us is to rebel by rejecting this lifestyle imposed on us ar at least making it toreable by putting less effort on it and more effort in forging meaningful connections, trying to live the present moment and experiencing the world around us.
We have to also understand and accept all of our negative emotions and experience them in full instead of rushing to numbing them with pills as long as they are mild.
All that’s left for me to say is: if you are mentally struggling and yet you reject the medical approach and you refuse the psychiatric approach, please reach out for me perhaps I can offer a little help since I have been there before and I refused any medicine whatsoever.
